Brian Clark, aka copyblogger, gave a keynote at the 2010 Affiliate Summit that made me want to stand up and cheer. This is a man who clearly understands the wide divide between “old media” and “new media” on a philosophical level, and explains it with great clarity. Here he is speaking specifically to those web business folks who consider themselves affiliate marketers, but what he has to say applies equally to bloggers, podcasters, and anyone creating new media. Here’s my favorite quote:
Maybe you should stop thinking of yourself as an affiliate marketer. Certainly stop thinking of yourself as a webmaster. And please don’t ever call yourself a social media expert, unless you want people to gag.
So what are you? What business are you really in? From a mindset standpoint, I want you to realize that you’re in the media business. You’re a new media entrepreneur.
From Copyblogger’s lips to your ears, I could not have said it better myself. Do yourself a favor and watch the whole video. (Or listen to it at least, there’s not a whole lot of value on the screen, it’s all in the words.)
